Courses

The following is a sampling of courses required as part of the M.A. program. Since courses change from year to year, candidates should contact the department secretary at mideast@bgu.ac.il for an updated list of offerings.​

An introduction to the common and less-common approaches to the study of modern Middle Eastern societies, with an emphasis on their comparative advantages and weaknesses and their relevance to students’ research topics. Attention is also paid to the correlation between changes in the humanities and social sciences and in methods of researching the Middle East​.

An examination of the various interactions between colonial powers and Middle Eastern societies in the 19th and 20th centuries, including local responses to imperial actions and a critical analysis of the research literature on imperialism and colonialism in the Middle East.​

A history of religious minorities in Iran from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with a focus on Jews, Christians (Armenians and Eastern Orthodox), Zoroastrians, and Baha’is. Questions include how these groups understood and represented their identity in the Persian-Iranian space, and how they are both similar and different from other religious minorities in the Arabic-speaking world.​

An analysis of civil-state relations from the establishment of new nation-states through the changing social, political, and religious realities in the region. Topics for study include the connection between the social contract and the development of monarchical, tribal, or authoritarian regimes an the influence of the Arab Spring on the social contract.​

The history of Jews, Christians, and other minorities in Islamic cultures, with an emphasis on expanding the discourse on Jewish-Muslim relations in Israel and Palestine. Topics include the determination of “minority" as concept and category and the multi-national and diverse heritage of the Ottoman empire.​

A workshop designed to build students' skills in the preparation of a master's thesis, beginning with the structure and determination of content and progressing to the search for material and writing of the final draft.

Study of issues related to academic writing, editing, and publishing, as well as to the critical analysis of academic texts. Designed for students in the research track, in particular on the editorial board of the department's journal Jama'a, the workshop aims to strengthen skills in writing academic articles.​
