Message from the Dean of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science

Dean’s Message

Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science — a home for researchers, students, and a forward-looking vision of science and technology.
My name is Prof. Matya Katz, Dean of this newly established faculty.

The Faculty of Computer and Information Science was inaugurated in the 2025–26 academic year, following a thorough two-year process of planning and development. It was established by bringing together two outstanding departments: Computer Science and Software and Information Systems Engineering. Our vision was to create a broad and innovative academic framework that unites, under one roof, areas of research and expertise spanning from the theoretical foundations of computer science (such as complexity theory) to applied fields (such as biomedical informatics and cyber security).

The faculty currently includes about 80 academic staff members and is expected to continue expanding rapidly in the coming years. It is organized into five research institutes, each focusing on a distinct core area within computer and information science. Together, they form a vibrant environment of collaboration and scientific innovation. The faculty’s unique structure is designed to address the profound implications of the accelerating developments in this field and to adapt to the changing patterns of teaching and learning in the digital age.

Our faculty members are among the leading researchers in their fields worldwide. Many returned to join us after postdoctoral training at top international research institutions and have earned global recognition and reputation. The faculty has achieved a critical mass of excellence across many areas, including both theoretical and applied aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

One of the notable characteristics of the faculty is its strong connection to the high-tech industry. We maintain extensive collaborations with leading technology companies in Israel and abroad through joint projects, hackathons, and innovation initiatives. These collaborations provide students with hands-on experience and expose researchers to real-world challenges, thus enriching the research and strengthening the faculty’s contribution to both the economy and society.

The faculty offers four major undergraduate programs, all of which are highly selective and intellectually challenging, combining rigorous theoretical study with comprehensive, up-to-date practical training. We attach great importance to educating the next generation and invest significant effort in providing high-quality teaching. We emphasize the cultivation of original, creative, and analytical thinking, which are essential for academic excellence and for meeting the research and technological challenges of tomorrow. Over the years, our graduates have gone on to hold key positions in the high-tech industry and in academia, both in Israel and abroad. Today, approximately 2,000 students are enrolled in the faculty’s various programs.

At the graduate level, the faculty offers advanced M.Sc. programs in Computer Science and in Information Systems, with specializations in areas such as Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence. Our master’s and doctoral students enjoy excellent study conditions, generous academic and financial support, and opportunities to engage in teaching.

Behind the faculty’s dynamic activity stands a dedicated and professional administrative and technical staff, whose sense of purpose and collaboration with the academic faculty create a vibrant, innovative, and supportive community. Their contribution is central to the students’ learning experience and to the researchers’ scientific achievements.

The combination of academic excellence, intellectual openness, and genuine partnership fosters an environment that encourages learning, creativity, and innovation — the human engine driving our young and growing faculty.

I invite you to join us to learn, to explore, and to help build together an inspiring community of science, curiosity, and innovation.
